New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
